William L. Barnett
A native of Indiana, William Barnett began his piano training in music at age four, once his devoted mother found a teacher willing to work with someone so young. His work in sacred music and concert performance began at the tender age of twelve, thus beginning a professional musical journey that has extended now for well over 30 years. In his long and vibrant musical career, he has established himself as a visionary, masterful musician, delighting audiences and congregations with his bold, passionate playing style and his warm, engaging demeanor. Through the years, William has been featured in countless venues throughout the country as an organist, pianist, choral conductor, vocalist, and clinician. His performances have also been featured on NPR, in numerous recordings, and on international flights of Delta Airlines.
In addition to his work as a concert artist and composer, William has served as a Worship and Music Director in churches of every size in a number of denominations. His energetic and innovative methods have brought him wide acclaim from congregations, pastors, bishops, and audiences alike. In 2002, William moved to Arizona to assume the position of Director of Music in a 3000 member Lutheran Congregation, where he developed and directed a massive music and arts program involving over 400 active participants, multiple staff, and was responsible for the installation of a new 92 rank pipe organ in the grand sanctuary. Before leaving Phoenix, William served lengthy tenures as Music Director for the nationally acclaimed music program at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Phoenix and for Faith Lutheran Church, also in Phoenix.
William has served in an advisory capacity on a number of boards from professional music organizations to synods and dioceses. He has won numerous awards and citations for his work in music and in ministry. He continues to perform nationally as a featured organist, pianist, and choral conductor.
William's broad education in private and advanced collegiate study includes organ and piano performance, choral conducting and vocal development, liturgy, early music, music theory, eastern philosophy, transpersonal psychology, and energy psychology. In recent years, he has turned his attention to recording and composing, creating a number of albums in solo piano and music for healing and contemplation. He is currently working on four new organ performance recordings that feature Baroque, French, and American composers.
As a speaker and clinician, William travels throughout the country to teach and offer presentations in music, liturgy, worship, and music program development. He also serves as an organ consultant for churches undertaking pipe organ projects, and as a sacred music consultant, assisting churches in revitalizing their worship and music programs.
William resides in Portland, Oregon with his spouse and two dogs, where he serves as the principal organist and pianist at Lake Oswego United Methodist Church. He is available worldwide as a concert organist, choral conductor, pianist, clinician, and consultant.
